The Deer Tower was built in the 18th century as an eye-catcher for Shillinglee House to the north. In recent years, James and Clare Kirkman have converted it into a very special and unique country house. It is built of brick and stone and rendered elevations, surmounted by four round turrets. It is set on high ground with glorious formal gardens surrounded by its own 120-acre park. The gardens include a 'sculpture-court', in which works by 20th century artists such as Picasso, Brancussi, and Lipchitz are recreated in the form of Irish yew trees. Original bronze works by the sculptors Barry Flanagan and Henry Moore form the culmination of various vistas in other parts of the garden.
