Giffords Hall is one of the most attractive houses in England. Composed of a variety of different building types of different periods, it strikes a powerful impression against the Suffolk countryside.
Begun by the Mannocks c.1428, it was held in the same family until 1883. Most of the house belongs to the early 16th century. The brick gate-house is 2-storeyed with angle-turrets which have battlements and brick pinnacles. Through the gate- house, one finds oneself in a rectangular courtyard with brick, half-timbered, mullioned and transomed windows, polygonal chimneys and one big Venetian window. The hall is the great glory of the house. It has a magnificent double-hammer-beamed roof with very fine carving. The house is complemented by a gently terraced garden situated to the east containing an Orangery.
Giffords Hall became the home of the shipping family, the Brocklebanks in the 1930s.
