There has been a moated stronghold at Wylre since the 12th century. The present castle was built in 1652. The property is now home to the art collector Jo Eyck. There are fine formal gardens surrounding the castle; 'rooms' are themed into colours, and there are large box parterres, a newly created formal kitchen garden and several orchards. The whole is divided up by immaculately cut yew hedges and pleached lime screens. The lawns and 'wilderness' are home to a wide selection of works by internationally renowned sculptors from Europe and America such as; Carl Andre, Ad Deckers, Donald Judd, Richard Long, Juan Munoz, Giuseppe Penone and Peter Struyken. A new art gallery, named 'The Hedge House' is currently being constructed within the garden at Wylre, designed by the Dutch architect Wiel Arrets.
